No, I wouldn't throw your keys under the seat for the night.

Mainers are a trusting sort, for the most part.  You'll hear of people in your neighborhood that actually still leave the keys in their unlocked car or truck for the night, but we all know that's asking for trouble.  Yes, vehicles are stolen, even in Maine.

In 2019, there were 81 vehicles stolen in the Bangor metropolitan area alone, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Now according to insurify.com, the most popular vehicle in Maine so far for the year 2020 is the Ford Focus, with an average price of $19,863.  So where did the Ford Focus show up on the list of most stolen vehicles in Maine?

Here's the full list , once again, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, an organization that examines all sorts of vehicle theft data across the country. The data below is from the year 2018, the most recent available.

  1. 2006 Chevrolet Pickup (full size)
  2. 2002 GMC Pickup (full size)
  3. 2006 Ford Pickup (full size)
  4. 2010 Ford Focus
  5. 2017 Nissan Sentra
  6. 1996 Dodge Pickup (full size), tied with 2013 Hyundai Sonata
  7. 2003 Toyota Camry, tied with 2006 Chevrolet Impala
  8. 2004 Toyota Corolla
  9. 2004 Chevrolet Malibu, tied with 2002 Dodge Caravan
  10. 2017 Hyundai Accent

So if you happen to own one of these vehicles we suggest that you keep it under lock and key, say, in your garage at night.  Because Lord knows who exactly is out there trolling the streets under the cover of darkness in search of a 14 year-old Chevy full size pickup with a rusted out bed and no tailgate. Apparently there's a demand.
