Boston Hospital Has a Rooftop Garden That Produces Fresh Food for Patients
According to Majically, Boston Medical Center is known for being the greenest hospital in all of the land. This is something they take very seriously!
The hospital’s power plant building has the largest rooftop farm in Boston. It is a 2,500-square-foot farm where crops are grown in organic soil in recycled milk crates. The eco-friendly environment also insulates the building, which helps reduce their carbon footprint. AKA good for the planet!
My favorite part is that with they feed patients, staff and low-income families with the organic vegetables they grow. While someone is sick in the hospital, they shouldn't be forced to eat processed foods that are harmful to their bodies. It seems like common sense but many hospital cafeterias don't offer enough healthy options.
David Maffeo is Boston Medical Center’s senior director of support services and he said
“Food is medicine,” explains. That’s why we’re doing what we’re doing.”
Hopefully, other hospitals in Northern New England will follow suit! :)
